that's right - the month of september just rapidly passed me by. i'm grateful for the deck of cards project because it'll give me something to work on during a creative dry spell. or you know, let fall by the wayside like a number of other projects i've started.
either way, october has rolled right in and let me needing something new. i am leaning towards making my own font because i think that's a bit less ambitious than the card deck. could also make a few fonts of i feel like i'm finishing things too quickly.
anyway, happy october!
i never finish anything

september: two of clubs

this of course inspired by hatch show print, and in particular this poster:
(hatch is a huge inspiration to me aesthetically, and in making this i realize that i owe hatch itself a card but probably will forgo that because i've already used it here.) every time i try and create imagery like this, i'm faced with the spacial challenges that hatch overcomes so beautifully.
anyway, patsy cline is awesome. i heard a segment on npr about her a few weeks ago (her birthday was september 8) and i found it so great that she pursued her talents in spite of having a husband who didn't support her quest for stardom, wanting her to conform to a life of a simple housewife. the song she was arguably most famous for, crazy, was written by willie nelson. initially, cline attempted to sing the song like he did - but the song became the success that it is today because cline decided instead to sing it in her own idiosyncratic manner.
also awesome is loretta lynn, who sings in the same style but much more about women's rights, liberation and sexuality.
in spite of the fact that both of these women were most popular in nashville's heyday, i can't help but give austin (read: austin public radio) a bit of credit on making music like this much more present in my consciousness. thanks, kut!

september: queen of hearts
after a brief hiatus, i'm back (with internet access). here's the latest:

i am trying to avoid aesthetic stereotypes but couldn't resist using pink against the muddled green/brown. also, on this note, please check out shadi ghadirian and feel free to share your own interesting iranian (or any) women artists.
probably not going to make it through the whole deck, but there's no use giving up now!

september: ace of diamonds, two of spades
the neat thing about this project is that because i have a time constraint (and i'm not being graded on anything), i'm forced to finish cards in a timely manner, instead of obsessing over every tiny detail. i think this can really help in being prolific and learning to work efficiently.
here are two cards i made last night:

one thing i'm realizing is how dependent i am on dafont.com (another project: making my own set of fonts!) and how much i like to cling to certain styles and types. for instance: i would like to use the "A" font for pretty much every card.
here's a fun time for your input, and potentially some ideas. what inspires you this month?

september. one
i had the idea tonight to start a monthly project. self-imposed deadlines are rarely enough motivation for me, but that's why i make things public (on the internet.)
for the month of september, i am making a deck of cards - 52 things that inspire me. hopefully the inspiration will remain and i won't be pulling stupid things out of nowhere to finish up. it's probably too big a project to take on this late in the month, but we'll see what happens.
tonight, i made the cover card. it feels a bit bare, as most of my design work does.
i am thinking about making physical cards and scanning them, versus creating the entire project on a computer. we'll see what happens. i'm excited to see how this project will evolve over the next few weeks.
